I saw a video of a tidal surge/bore in Morecambe Bay near Lancaster in NW England a week or two ago...but couldn't tell much because of the distance & perspective involved. Then I learned about how dangerous the place was due to quicksands...and about all the illegal Chinese immigrants who got trapped there and tragically drowned while trying to harvest cockles back in 2004. Guess it was a huge story back then and caused quite a scandal due to the illegal immigrant worker exploitation that was unveiled. Do you know much else about the place Kidderlidder?
There are several small tidal bores that rise out of Morecambe Bay. They're not often surfable and certainly not worth the couple of hundred miles journey north for me when I have the Severn on my doorstep. I know that when conditions are just right..big enough tide and the freshwater in the river at the right depth then they can generate a fun wave of maybe waist high or a little over, but we are talking a couple of times every year maybe. Out on those sand/mudflats is deadman's country though. A bit like surfing the Severn below Arlingham, the place belongs to the tides and it's no place to be. These tides are truly intense , there's a world of quicksand , and the currents can be heading in almost every direction. I would say hovercraft access only. But when I said a fun wave, I WAS talking in the rivers. Check youtube for tidal bores of the Lune, Ribble, Kent,Calder and the Arnside bore. UK also has the Dee, which used to be surfed regularly, and the Trent, which gets big enough, but way too fat and gentle to surf. The Parrett is a tiny bore which some of the bore crew have ridden just for a laugh...that's on Youtube too.
you sure do know a lot about bores!.....but do you know anything about boars?....because chuckie's never seen a pig weiner and he may need a little edumocation on the subject!
Yes. Couldn't give a shit my friend. Really couldn't. Although I realise that factual stuff is a little out of character for photo comments on MSW. Tidal bores are something I know about and most people, even surfers, don't. So if I can pass on a little info and help people to understand/enjoy/surf them better then so be it. I'll be boring.
listen carefully.....do you hear that?....sort of a faint whistling sound....hear it?......thats the sound of my last comment whizzing right over your head!
No it didn't, but
1) You have to admit, it's a rather old joke and
2) I AM boring. Better to be factual than try and fail to be a comedy genius. I'll leave that to people who actually CAN do it.
In particular I shall be trying my very hardest to be boring on the 18th of this month, somewhere in Gloucestershire UK.
Celebrating my birthday by going for a little splash around in a muddy river. I'll do that for a couple of hours then do something less boring, like maybe head over to the coast for some "proper" waves. You know, the ones that real bodyboarders normally ride?
hey,
hows it going.
Surfed (or attemepted to) surf the severn bore for the first time on saturday at stone-bench and although i failed i loved it, really good vibe in the water and just a fun morning. Was just wondering if you knew, and could tell me, where that shot on here that youve commented on was shot?
cheers
Luke.
ps really like your forum and would love to register for it
I don't think I ever noticed this comment !!! Sorry Luke.
If you haven't worked it out yet the shot was taken around the corner immediately downstream of the Severn Bore Inn.
I met you briefly on the last set of tides on the Saturday at Arlingham. (Very tall mate of Stu's who ISN'T south african) Didn't get in the water as it was due to be pretty punchy and I had not got wet in a year following an injury sustained on the bore.
I was out last weekend on the in-betweeny tide, and I'll be on the river for the duration of the next set.
