Hi, looks like you've been surfing a bit in Kenya (good pics btw). Am out in Nairobi from Feb-June and looking for any pointers on breaks/ people to surf with. Am planning to take a board on the advice of stormrider, which reckons that there's not much out there in the way of surf gear. Is Malindi the best area to head for? And I'm getting the impression that the swell will pick up from May onwards- that right? Cheers for any advice.
Yeah it can be good but it just really depends, im out there in march/april. There are some good breaks but hard to find. There is one point break in Mombasa Harbour called English point but tide dependant. General rule of thumb is surf in the morning because after lunch the wind picks up onshore generally. Apparanetly malindi and watamu can be good. Also there is a rivermouth of the sabaki river, (just north of malindi) that can be good but is a two mile walk from the sabaki river bridge. There is also alot of unexplored reef along the coast but youll need a boat to get to. And yeah i think there are very few places to get equipment so bring your own.
Cheers for that. Well, I'm out in Nairobi and managed to get my board out here in one piece. Have also emailed H20 extreme (or their accomodation people, Kenyaways) who are based out of Diani. They mainly do kitesurfing but do some surfing themselves when it's on, and reckon they might be able to help me find a few waves. Not sure how I'll be able to swing it with work, but hopefully won't be long before I get to the coast. If you want to look me up in case I'm there in March, my email is nathanielmason{at}gmail.
I'm in Nairobi at the moment and desperate to get across to the coast to find some waves. If anyone has any idea where to start or want to do a trip give me a shout. Not sure about the Hippos in the line-up though!
