Week 01: Everyone in the surfing world is caught up in the contest hype,(checkout surfline.com if you even care). However, the real men at work understand that all the unsung glory that goes on away from triple crown is what is real intriguing. Who cares that someone posted a 9.0 is wind blown conditions. Jamie O'brien posting a 0.0 in his own backyard on a ten foot pipe bomb is way more exciting. My point being is that, everyone captures contest footage. Anyone can take a huge lens and sit back on the comfort and saftey of the sand and fire away. Maybe he or she will get 1 good shot out of 200. But people like Scott Aichner, Pat Stacey, Jeff Flindt, and of course Brian Bielman/SPL/Nelly/Burkard have paved the way for thinking outside the box. In the last year I have grown as a videographer. I made my mistakes and to that person, they know who they are, I am deeply and truly sorry for what I did. But, I must move on. I learned that unlike the rest of the videographer who like to play it safe by covering major contests for the web companies, I hate it. I despise everything about it, from the staged interviews that no one really likes doing, to the format of the contests. Here are some facts that everyone needs to learn to accept: 1) If a world title is on the line, no matter how much BS slater feeds you about he doesn't want to win or compete, count on the little bald headed guy to show up and blow up. 2) Never count AI out of Triple Crown Title contention, no matter what rumors are going around. 3) Face it Bruce is retiring from competitive surfing and thank God....I can't wait or the second Bruce movie... 4) Jamie O'brien is Mr. Pipeline.....I'll post a video clip later on in this 6 weeks, when the surf goes flat to support my statement. Also watch Freakshow and Freakside.. 5) Surfers are human too.... They get p#*&$&$ed at the power rating trash talk too.... 6) "Lets go out and F#** this guys shot up." - Scott Aichner about shooting from water, addressing all the photographers now days with huge lens sitting on the beach being lazy. In closing, it has been about a year now since I have been to the North Shore. Yes, I'm a little out of shape, but with a little local knowledge, a open mind, and a little luck one can find their wildest dreams come true. Aloha-Ryan Moss
