Hey Kiwi John...Do you live anywhere near Hadrian's Wall? I was just reading something about it in a Smithsonian magazine and saw Northumberland mentioned. The tourist/history buff side of me is fascinated by that Roman ruin!
No mate, I live in Sheffield. We have friends that live in Alnwick (Alnwick castle is the Harry Potter castle in the movies) and we see our friends quite often so my surfing is mainly done up on the Northumberland coast between Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh Castle (look these up) I have seen and walked some of Hadrians wall and its impressive considering building started in 122 AD but its a bit boring once you've done a couple of miles.

Your use of the word tiktaalik caught my attention because: (a) I didn't know what it was but the context you used it in got me curious...and...(b) It was the second time I've seen it used in these MSW comments since I've been here...So I had to look it up! It's NOT an Afrikaans word for some African land critter like I had assumed.
It is Inuit(?) for a now extinct (fossil remains only) ancient, primitive 'salamander' (or amphibian) that is thought to be a missing link between aquatic and land critters. I can't believe I was so in the dark about it. I'm supposed to be interested in that stuff and keep up with it. It may be long gone...but now has it's own song!
