sand bars underneath the surface may be contributing to the formations...

i'm not sure how you differentiate between the incoming tide and the "shock wave". Here in the bay of fundy the bore is deffinetly the incoming tide: there is no ebb after the bore. The bore is the incoming tide water which gets "channeled" or "compressed" by the high sides of the bay... when that incoming water collides with river water flowing in the opposite direction you get a bore or a wave. I suspect the same thing is happening here...

	Do you surf any of the Fundy bores? Would be interesting to compare notes if you do. The Severn crew also have pretty regular contact with the people on les Mascarets and with Sergio Laus who surfs several of the Amazonian Pororoca. I've always been told nobody surfs bores around New Brunswick and Nova Scotia???? If that's true it should be rectified.
