Despite conditions being less than desirable with 30 knot onshore winds, cold temperatures and a messy 2.0m swell, the event kicked off with a full day of explosive surfing.
20.6oC water temperature in Gisborne at the moment, but the air temperature is currently only 17C or so there at the moment.
A tropical cyclone (hurricane) is expected to pass close to the area early next week, so they will get some big long period swell from that next week for the competition (e.g thursday, 31st March, or so (going on current models and forecasts (Tropical Cyclones can be unpredictable, and where it ends up all depends on the timing of it leaving the tropics and the influence of a trough passing over NZ this weekend)
Dude i have gone surfing in boardshorts and a rashie on the hottest day of the year here in Ireland and the water temp never gets higher than 17/18 degrees celcius....20 is not...not cold water...and 17 is not a cold air temp....its practically tropical
