CREATIVE DESTRUCTION: odds & ENDS
25578 Views

Remember Creative Destruction? The Runamuk Visuals series starring Wade Goodall plus a cohort of diverse cameos and locations. The cast included: Metallica, Taj Burrow, Pohnpei, Burning Man and some Mexican orphans. But there was also a fair whack of chasing down of swells and way-out surfing.

Well it's over. Like all good things it has ended, but this is not goodbye. The happy news is that there is still life down the well and we briefly caught up with Jake of Runamuk Visuals to find out exactly what that means...

So we loved Creative Destruction project, and is this it? The (25 minute) goodbye?

Cheers, for an online world full of so many anonymous haters it was humbling receiving so much positive feedback and knowing we were reaching the happy faces of the online surf world. But yeah, Odds & Ends is it, the best surfing from the series with a handful of our fondest lifestyle and scenic memories tied together with a new soundtrack and a brain festering animation from Ozzie, Vaughan and Nanda. I hate farewells, but this one felt pretty good, haha.

What was the high point of the project, your most memorable moment?

The refuge for kids in Mexico was amazing. It's fair to say it had a massive impact on Wade, Sterling and my life. Those kids made us all so happy and to see what surfing had brought to their, at times, very rough lives was rad... Metallica, that was all kinds of f^@}{*d up also.

And the low point?

When Wade broke his wrist in Chapter 8 the boat began to sink a little. Wade's pretty passionate about what he does and what he's out to create. It's his name and face out in the public eye. When this first injury happened it made it tough to produce entertaining video, Wade's not the sort of guy to talk shit about the why's, when's and how's, so it left us a little lost. Then he compound fractured his leg... That was as low as Creative Destruction got.

CD has always been a little bit out there, what would you hope people have taken from the series?

I looked around at what was going on in surf film both online and hardcopy and majority of the best productions were taking the aesthetic path, you know, in amongst the high end surfing was beautiful imagery and guys like Kaiza and Riley were doing it well, real well. So I wanted to take a different path, to tell a story. Building a relationship with the subject has always been a strong point in my work and with athletes I'm always working to help promote who they are and what they are all about and do it legitimately.

With Wade it was easy as we are good mates and have been since we were kids... On the flip side being mates can make it hard also 'cause he would just call me out when he was off it... Sometimes it was as simple as "shit question, nah not answering that" haha

But yeah, we were out to create a point of difference without 'begging to differ" I wanted the kids to get to know Wade and feel like they were apart of Creative Destruction.

The surfing short is an ever evolving art form, but where is next for your surf shorts?

I have a concept that I think will shake shit up. I just need a brand or backer that is open to change and doesn't need control and isn't athlete specific. I need a brand that wants to promote our sport more than their label... Haha, yeah, good luck with that.

The Ozzie animation seems to involve a lot of being consumed, death and rebirth. This a representation of?

The animation is Ozzie, Vaughan Blakey and Nanda Ormond's creation. We let them do whatever they wanted, it's their interpretation of Creative Destruction and Wade, and we loved it. Just the fact Vaughan showed us some of his stuff and said it could work for CD was so sick. I've always admired Vaughan's writing and watched him turnaround the magazines he's run and I'm pretty sure Ozzie has had a lot to do with Wade's path. They also created Doped Youth the best surf narrative film I have ever seen.

What is next for you, Wade and the CD associates?

Time will tell. Wade's surfing is back and I've started a clothing range and all you reading this would look fine in our threads.
