The Surf

Surfers are spoilt for choice at Silverdog. Ride or walk down the hill to Super Sucks, Play Grounds and Donuts.

Sumbawa’s most sought after wave is at your door step. Super Suck is a heavy left hander known for its awesome barrels. Shallow and sharp Supersucks is a wave for the experienced surfer and best surfed on the high tide.

Playgrounds and Donuts
These two breaks are right near Supersucks. Playgrounds is a great beginners wave and is directly in front of Silverdog. Donuts is further off to the right, a fun wave and it is rarely crowded.

A 20 minute ride south gets you to this fun consistent wave located in Sekonkang. YoYo’s is surfable on most tides and rarely disappoints. There are two spots at YoYo. The Hook and The Wedge. The Hook is located about 400 metres from a looming cliff face and breaks right. The Wedge is right up close to the cliff face. It closes out when it’s over 8 feet.

Not too far past YoYo’s you’ll find Tropicals. Tropicals has a left and right break. The channel means an easy paddle out. This wave also suits beginners to intermediate surfers.

Like Super Sucks there are plenty of barrels on offer at Scar reef. Works best with a large south west swell. Scar Reef is located 20 minutes North of Jelenga. It’s a hollow left hander best surfed on a low tide. It’s called Scar reef for a reason...experienced surfers only.

The Island:

Despite mining being the main industry West Sumbawa is still a very traditional and unspoilt Island paradise. Favoured by surfers rather than tourists West Sumbawa is uncrowded and offers it’s visitors the opportunity to experience “real Indonesia”. It really is a place for those seeking adventure and new experiences – a place for travellers rather than tourists.
Newmont Mining opened it’s gold and copper mine here in the mid-90’s and virtually everyone in West Sumbawa is somehow linked to the mine. It is the second largest open cut mine in Indonesia and as a result miners from around the globe call West Sumbawa home from time to time.

While the mine has seen the numbers of Westerners increase the Island is populated by around 1.25 million Muslims and for that reason it is still a very traditional place. We ask that you are mindful of some of the local customs, for example, please wear a shirt when you ride or walk through the villages, no alcohol on public streets and use your right hand or both hands to pass things onto others.

Observing these requests is a small ask and allows you and us to enjoy the beautiful beaches and jungle surrounds in harmony with the Locals.
