It's been an October to remember over on the States' right coast. When that locale flairs up, you know it's going to be days of heavy cylinders, detonating just feet from shore. And this past week's been no exception partly thanks to the fair lady, Tropical Storm Melissa.

“I haven't seen a swell setup in early October like this for south facing shores in the northeast since 2004,” says east coast lensman Shawn Casey aka Yewwville. A 15-year best ever October aren't words to take lightly. Countless epic sessions have pounded New Jersey and New York over the years so to hear it's been all-time is quite the claim. And we can't apologise for spamming images of those perfect a frames over on our Instagram account when it has been this good.

Forecast: New York and New Jersey

Our swell chart showing Melissa on October 10. Even before that, swell was in the water.

Our historic swell report for Long Beach a couplea days back has the swell capping at 7.5ft@13 seconds, coupled with strong offshore wind. The perfect mix to help create those barrels we love emerging out of the east coast. But most of the swell came from a non-tropical nor'easter before Melissa was even given an identity. Regardless, everyone is calling it the Melissa swell with some of the biggest and cleanest surf seen in recent memory.

“Back in 2004 it's a of surf that I reference frequently,” says Shawn. “This year, one setup was very similar but produced even better and bigger waves. It was four or five days of N-NE winds and pumping E-SE groundswell with no boots or gloves. It is the dream for this time of year.

Finally shaped up today!!

“Was a potent system for sure. Some of the worst flooding since Sandy reported in NJ even with little rain, pretty scary stuff. The surf was unreal, harvested my best tubes in years, plenty of size and great shape. It got pretty raw and unruly at times honestly, with the gusty offshores and long period juice, but if you timed the tides and variable winds right it was pure magic.”
