WATCH: Chile’s Punta de Lobos Finally Awakens

By on

It’s been years since we’ve seen Chile’s own mean mound of water at Punta de Lobos look like this. Thursday saw the biggest swell of the season rumble into Southern America, a juggernaut of a swell – luckily a couple of big wave chargers were on site to huck into this thing.

You see, the plan was to run a big wave contest there on Thursday but it was stood down right at the last minute. No problem. On the ground was Tony Laureano, a name you may know from his breakout season at Nazare this past winter. Reporting live from the scene for MSW, Tony was on this thing from dawn til dusk – despite being banished to the spin zone on a particularly dazzling wipeout.

"After the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere, I decided to come spend two winter months in the Southern Hemisphere, in this case to Chile, looking for giant waves, together with the local Cristian Merello," said Tony.

"For almost two months we had a lot of tube sessions and big waves, but nothing huge as was the goal.

"Then, last week, it happened. The paddling session for me was a little complicated, there were a lot of people in the water and a very strong current, which made it difficult to position myself to catch the wave I wanted. In the afternoon, when the wind came in, Cristian and I decided to do a tow-in session to have fun, and it was this session that made my day.

"Fortunately, everything went well, no one got hurt, we caught good waves and spent an incredible day with friends."

As for Cristian Merello, who calls Punta de Lobos home, he launched into some of the biggest waves of the day.

"This was the biggest swell of the year so far," said Cristian.

"The swell formed very close to the coast of Punta de Lobos, and normally when this happens we know that the waves will be huge, in this case they were around 7-9 meters.

"During the session we saw giant tubes and incredible drops. I was able to put the 10 foot boards to the test and all the training I’ve been doing throughout the year.

"It was an incredible session, where we had from 8am to 3pm in the water paddling and tow-in. I’m very happy to be able to enjoy waves like this at home and to see a lot of people motivated to surf big waves."

Some other names worthy of a mention include Patricio Mekis who catapulted into another bomb out there. And Jonathan Rubio, who took a huge beating at the bottom of this monster; free falling down the face and hitting a speed bump, pinging him off his board like a ragdoll.

Yeah, luckily, our pal Ben de Sa managed to capture all the actions above. Hit play on the vid above and keep an eye on the lively Punta de Lobos forecast, HERE.
