Autumn has arrived in France. Weather patterns are shifting and low-pressure systems have begun blasting into the country's South West, as evidenced here as the season gets under way in Hossegor.

You can count on the world class beachbreaks of l'Hexagone to light up when those numbers begin to jack. And committed lensman Damian Davila dropped everything to make the 10-hour, 1,000km road trip from Belgium to la Graviere last week - right in time for what could be the swell of the year so far.

“Hossegor was pumping last week,” Damian relays to MSW. “Some even said it may have been the best surf Hossegor's seen in 2017 so far, and a perfect one to begin the fall season.

“My good friend Roy van Eijk, surfer from Holland, is always on the hunt for this kind of swell, making the 14 hour drive from his country to this spectacular beachbreak south, in the land of croissants. For sure the best pastries I ever had after swimming all morning.

“Roy texted me the night before and said it was a green light and he was picking me up in Belgium the next morning to make the journey. I cancelled my other assignments and got all my gear together giving a kiss good bye to my wife and my three-week old baby to go score some sick waves.

“During our stay, every day we woke up before sunrise to drink some coffee and get ready and drive  towards the beach to jump in the water and start shooting.

"After scoring three sessions per day, every day, we always ended with some delicious croissants and chocolatines with a double espresso coffee to re-fuel and do it all over the following morning.

“Roy is already planning the next mission on the next swell.”
