As you've probably seen from our photo-spam on IG this week, France has been nothing short of spectacular. A sustained run of swell meant for days of excellent surf – perhaps one of the longest swell runs seen this season.
Things are winding down today in Hossegor but there's a still a playful pulse out there for those who haven't completely obliterated their shoulders over the past few days.
In fact, this insane run of swell began back on March 25, and though some days suffered a bit of morning sickness, it's been one hell of a show.
Local hero Pat Beven has surfed every day this swell's been on. “We've had a load of good days from this past week,” he says. “I don't think it's been the best swell of the year – but definitely the longest run we've had, for sure.”
“There's been glassy mornings, 4-6ft and everyone's just been ripping,” adds photographer Eugene van der Elst.
And about this sustained run of swell, MSW forecaster Tony Butt said: “The system that generated the swell originated from the remnants of a low over Canada that moved out into the open Atlantic, combined with a second centre that developed east of Newfoundland on Friday 26.
“The double-centred system intensified southwest of Iceland on Saturday 27, with a strong westerly fetch on its southern flank generating a pulse of large, long-period swell.
“The system quickly weakened on Sunday and Monday, leaving the swell to propagate cleanly towards Biscay and Portugal, with virtually no locally-generated short-period swell within a radius of at least 500 miles. Local conditions on the coast were good throughout Tuesday, with very weak pressure gradients over the Iberian Peninsula.
“In France, the swell started arriving late Monday, ramped up during the early hours of Tuesday, and pumped all day, with wave heights hitting ten feet or so and light variable winds, with light offshores in the morning.”
And there's more – we're in the process of cutting you a fine edit from the past week in France, which we'll be dropping early next week. Stay tuned.
Bonus! Brittany's been absolutely firing too.
