SURFING in Israel is not new, nor is it easy and the inconsistency will drive you crazy.
Generally it is shock which accompanies the realisation that the waves and surf culture here is recognisable to any surfer from any coastline. But it is the flat spells which get you (and they can last up to three weeks), all you do is watch surf movies, catch the live webcasts of surf contests around the world and wait patiently for waves. When the swell arrives everyone is fired-up creating a full-on and exciting vibe in the water. At the popular breaks (which are normally located in the main cities) the lineups become seriously crowded with up to 100 surfers out at any one time. Because of this Israeli surfers often travel the world in a search for quality waves, Central America, Australia and Sri Lanka being the most popular destinations.
Israel gets waves all year round but during the winter time (November - April) the surf is more consistent and largest (by Israel standards) up to a maximum of around 8ft. During the summer off-season it averages around 2-3ft but it's not consistent in the slightest, making forecasting the waves crucial.
Israel is not an idle place for a surfer, we feel lucky to have waves and to be a part of this amazing way of life called surfing.
