A few weeks ago, the North Pacific's first XXL swell of the season tore into Hawaii, California and everything in between. Of course, that huge, rolling mass of liquid fervour set off big wave surfing's favourite spectacle at Jaws. Queue drama, surfers scrambling for flights to Maui's mega wave, Albee Layer making a comeback and all the majestic chaos and nuance that goes into a primed big wave session.
Much action? You betcha and shooting on the cliffs exclusively for MSW was Maui Media Cartel aka, Carlo and Adam Carbajal, some of the more dedicated Jaws lensman when a session like this blips on the radar. Hit play above for all the action from a colossal day of surfing.
Here's what Maui Media Cartel said about it all: "This day started in the dark in Makawao and Haiku. Loaded up and out the door at 4:30am. Four Wheel drive down a mile or so of cane ruts, pits, and a stretch we call "The Gauntlet" at 5:10am. By 5:30am we were strapped with 75lbs of gear, set out and waved goodbye to the two other cars on the cliff gearing up pre-dawn.
"We climbed down a slippery sheer cliff, in the dark, and made it back to our beloved spot. Me and my brother.
"We cleared the Cartel hale for the 2021 season in the dark, in full sweat, grinding in the dirt. Around 6:20am we filmed our first clips of the season. Yuri Soledade tow-in and Shaun Stoddar on the first paddle. Nicely done boys.
"Take a look through our lenses. These Pe'ahi stories are the way we see it."
