JUSTIS emails to say he's never coming home from a place most people have never even been to. The red-eyed, salty frothers at Kandui are probably some of the most spoilt in the world. Every March they roll out the red carpet to anyone lucky enough to have found themselves in Mentawai's Playgrounds region.
There are two issues: it's expensive because it's miles away from anywhere, even Indo, which isn't local to most of us. It's elitist because it talkes a high level of ability to surf these waves in full throat. Albiet there are loads of fun waves around here, perfect for the intermediate building themselves up for a once in lifetime soil-your-pants Rifles session.
Living in the Mentawai Islands, (writes the aforementioned Justis St John) I have to constantly remind myself how good the surf truly can be. Two years ago, my obsession with the northern Mentawai Islands region ultimately resulted in my resignation letter after eight years of building my way up the corporate ladder. I sold everything I owned and threw everything else into my new life off the grid, living on remote island surrounded by perfect waves. My company, FTR Films, partnered with Kandui Resort. The 'Real Kandui', to help document everyday surfers' dream trips and to capture the beauty of the Mentawais on film. In two years I have at times questioned my decision to jump ship, but this season's surf confirmed I will never be coming home.
