Must Watch: Mick Fanning, Ireland, Slabs and Reflection on a Year Off Tour

By on

Chances are you're well educated on Mick Fanning's 2015. The shark incident, his brother's death during the Pipe Masters and the split from his wife. All contributed to him, in 2016, refraining from competing full time on tour. He's hand picked events, grabbed enough points to qualify, and alongside travelling and surfing in new places, kept his options for this year.

One of those travelled to places, although he's been before but never scored a swell, was Ireland where his father was born and where he feels his roots. Among scoring slabs for which the Emerald Isle has become synonymous and getting barrelled silly with Gearoid McDaid, Mick's particularly reflective and for this year at least, typically open and honest.

When talking about titles, the three time World Champ says, "people always ask me, 'do you want to win more?' And to be totally honest I couldn't care." Does this mean we've already seen the last of White Lightning in a jersey? We'll find out around March but for now, just enjoy the tubes, smiles and stoke above.
