The Basque Country is home to a number of pumping setups, but Punta Galea is one of the region's premier big wave venues. It's the reason why the annual Punta Galea Challenge attracts competitors from all over the globe.
And on December 30th, the 12th iteration of the event went down in heavy conditions. Natxo Gonzalez, Basque warrior, scored a perfect 10 and maybe one of the best waves ridden at PG.
But it was Nic Lamb who took the honours, making it back to back wins for the Santa Cruz surfer. He said: “I love it here. This place is incredible. It's my third time here, the first I came second and the last couple I won, so I love this place. I'm going to party tonight...”
Speaking to MSW Zuberoa Andrés Mendizabal from the Punta Galea Challenge said: “The waves took a while to come but once they arrived around 9.30am, they were pumping all day and got better for the end. They went from 4 to 5. The final was epic.
“Nic was definitely the best with two nines but our Natxo González, even if he got 5th, got the best score with an awesome 10 that made the crowd mad. Probably, it was the edition with the most specatators ever.”
