Rescue teams have called off the search for missing Quiksilver CEO Pierre Agnes, a day after his boat washed ashore in France – and the surf world are now sharing their memories of him and voicing their grief.

Pierre had gone out on a fishing trip in his 11-metre boat on Tuesday morning – later informing port authorities that he planned to delay his return due to thick fog.

But when his boat was spotted washed ashore, four helicopters and a sea search was launched, scouring the coast for any sign of him. Sadly, rescue efforts have now been officially stood down.

Pierre was the chief executive of Boardriders, which owns Roxy, Quiksilver and DC Shoes. Writing on Instagram, Kelly Slater said: “I love this man. Pierre Agnes went missing in Hossegor today when his boat washed ashore in the cold, early morning fog. I’m praying for a miracle but it’s just starting to hit me what a profound effect this man had on my life and the surf community at large. He loved his morning fishing trips, family, Quiksilver, surfing, friends, motorbikes, Capbreton...I’m not even sure how to let it sink in.”

I don’t even know where to start. Surfing has lost a great man yesterday. Taken by the ocean that he loved so much. I will never forget our countless of times fishing at the exact spot where he was taken. I can’t believe it. I don’t want to believe it. He was the hardest working man i knew. Always doing his best for others. It’s not fair. Thank you for everything Pierre. Thank you for changing my life. You gave me a chance when i was 9 years old when i had nothing and never stopped believing in me since. You changed many life for the better. Thank you for putting me back in my place when I was screwing around. Thank you for being REAL. There was never any bullshit with you. You teach me a lot about balance in life. Your beautiful family was always there for me. You will always be a second father. Marianne, Marine, Mathieu & Manon, love you guys
