Tributes are pouring in after the deaths of QS warrior Jean da Silva on Saturday and big wave hellman Oscar Moncada yesterday.
It was with a heavy heart that we report these tragedies. Both surfers were affable and well-liked within our humble community. Initial reports surrounding the circumstances of Jean's death are tragic. We'll update when those reports have been confirmed. Jean, 32, has been a staple on the QS for at least the past decade, a powerful surfer winning multiple events over his career.
A few days ago a friend left us, for him a better place and for us a sadder and lonelier planet. We wish you a safe journey wherever you are. We will never forget your beautiful smile, your kind heart and your beautiful style dancing on the waves. Till we meet again my friend @jeandasilva #jeandasilva
The surf world was rocked again on Sunday when Puerto Escondido stand out Oscar Moncada was reportedly killed in a car accident. Our man on the ground at Mexpipe, Edwin Morales, had been delivering the goods from a crazy Puerto season. Oscar's dedication to that wave is yet to be bested. He had spent two years on the Big Wave Tour, placing ninth at this year's Puerto Escondido Challenge. Oscar's death has seen an outpouring of tributes from the big wave contingent. Oscar had even posted a tribute to Jean the morning before the crash.
It's understood that three others were killed in incident.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to all families. Cover shot, Oscar at Puerto Escondido by Edwin Morales.
