Yeah, it’s been a bit of a weird season at Puerto Escondido so far. But you know what they say, good things come to those who continually check the charts every two minutes. Sure enough, a decent run of swell finally lit up the Mexican Pipeline this week — and it’s looking as if it’s only going to get better over the next couple of days.
This is a swell far better aimed at Puerto than July’s Code Red 2, and plenty of chargers were ready to reap the rewards. So who was there to take advantage of Oaxaca’s pummelling beach break? Well, big wave Brit legend Tom Lowe sniped a few exits, as did Pierce Watumull and Peruvian Sebastian Correa.

“I’ve been coming to Puerto for a long time but never got to catch it big,” said Sebastian.
“This is my first time here after COVID, so it was much-needed. I have a break similar at home in Peru but smaller, so I felt super confident out there. I like big waves, I like big barrels.”
New Yorker Kurt Rist has spent a lot of his summer months at Puerto Escondido and after moving there a few years ago, he was ready and waiting for this latest pulse.
“The last two days have been some of the best conditions of the year so far, it’s just been getting bigger and better everyday this week. Rode a 7'2" and an 8'0" shaped by Jeff “Doc” Lausch. Tomorrow though, think I’m going to get the 9'0" out.
“I’ve been living in Puerto Escondido for the past few years, I’m married to a local girl. I bounce back and forth between here and New York now and again, but I am basically here full time.”
Someone else who has spent their fair share out in the lineup at Playa Zicaleta is Lowey: “Last two days, it’s been perfect 8-to-12ft and yesterday even bigger.
“This place always surprises and catches you off guard. Reports say it might be smaller, then suddenly it’s juiced up. I was riding my 8'6" Carerra quad by Christensen Surfboards, was a brand new one and fast becoming my favourite. But today… it’s going to be big. Time to get the 9'6" out, hopefully it’s pumping.”
