John John Florence is meticulous. Perhaps something you wouldn't expect to hear about the 2016 world champ, with his relaxed demeanour and power carves and floppy, straw hair.
But peel back that veneer, just a touch, and there's a serious grounding to the North Shore lad – and you can bet that goes into any equipment that the champ's willing to stamp his approval on.
Take, for instance, the latest John John range from Dakine. The tail pad went before John seven times, and seven times, he sent it back. The kicker was too high, the direction and height of the grid pattern is off, the EA foam was too soft, not soft enough, the middle arch wasn't wide enough. John John is meticulous.
And birthed on the eighth attempt is what you see before you, deckpads created with exact input from your world champ, leashes too.
Dakine sent over a JJF leash, coloured electric orange and punctuated with a black accent on the ankle cuff. The aesthetic is pleasing, sure, and certainly bolder than anything I've used before. That is no bad element.
The leash is slim but does come in a variety of different sizes. The width isn't surprising, it is a comp leash, after all. “John John takes his equipment very seriously. He won’t just use a traction pad or a leash if he doesn’t feel it’s not going to help elevate his potential while competing,” said Micah Nickens, surf marketing director at Dakine. “Adding his name to any product is a very big deal to him. It only gets the green light once he’s 100 per cent sure it's exactly what he wants.”
This JJF collection is all about pushing functional and aesthetic limits – allowing one of the world's best surfers to tinker with design and have autonomy over the process is invaluable.
The hyper-grippy traction pad and series of surf leashes all ship in eco-friendly packaging that is built from recycled cardboard and no plastic, a request from Florence to reduce landfill waste. “Plastic free packaging and my favorite pad yet! I’m so happy to be back with the Dakine family,” said Florence. Coming off the most dominant season of any athlete in the history of professional surfing, Florence earned champion titles at the 2016 WSL World Championship, Hawaiian Triple Crown and Eddie Aikau Waimea Bay Invtiation. The JJF Collection is all about pushing the limits of surf accessories so one of the most progressive riders can continue to change the game.
