“Couple of hectic days, it keeps going,” said Basque barrel hound Aritz Aranburu about the past couple of days in the Mentawais.
And if that's not enough to go on, the GOAT was out there too. “The wave itself was the winner today,” said Kelly Slater, 50-years-old, and making a floater on the top of macking Indo look like it's just child's play.
Saturday, this thing was too big, too wild, a no-go low-tide death pit. With just Aritz out. But come Sunday and this thing was on, with former Quiksilver comrades Kelly, Aritz plus a couple others, putting on a masterclass.
“Pretty psycho,” said Kelly. “Lots of crazy waves. Plenty of good surfers on it … It’s a special swell. Some waves as big as you’d want at Kandui.”
While the Mentawais got it good, other spots weren't so blessed. “It never arrived for us,” said Moroccan charger Othmane Choufani, who went on a strike mission way down south with young French gun Kylian Guerrin. The likes of Bali and Uluwatu didn't quite get it good, though a few flashed of brilliance. The standout really was the Ments – and just in time for another swell too. Watch this space.
